Kootenai Community Centre Society presents Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence
Creston, BC: This June, Kootenai Community Centre Society (KCCS) is once again presenting Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®. This year, we’re going back to a live event!
Put Yourself in Her Shoes™:Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® is a campaign that has existed since 2001. It is participated in by men to end men’s sexualized violence. The walk is completed by men in high heeled shoes for one mile (1.6 km). Why women’s shoes? Men can actively address gender stereotypes and expectations, “In this space of playful confrontation and openness, it's possible to reveal and consider many of the underlying causes of men's sexualized violence with less defensiveness and denial.” (www.walkamileinhershoes.org)
This year, while we encourage men to wear the heels, in the spirit of inclusion and an acknowledgement that women often no longer wear heels, we are also suggesting “Walk A Mile In Her Sneakers.” Find yourself a pair of red sneakers and join in!
Last year COVID changed the look of the Walk. KCCS was determined to present it in person this year. Participants will once again join together and walk down Canyon St. for one mile. Participants can walk on their own or in teams. Prizes will be given for most pledges earned. The day will have speakers and music to complete the event.
Registration: Participants can register starting on May 1st, either by downloading the attachments below in advance (submit by email to rhondabruys@gmail.com) or in person at the event. Download your pledge sheets and start collecting! Heels can be picked up at the event (or wear your own!). The Walk will take place on June 11 at 1:00 pm. walk_a_mile_in_her_shoes_registration_2022.pdf wam_pledge_2022.pdf
